Like the Undaunted Daffodil

Like the daffodils and cherry blossoms this winter

sometimes we bloom unexpectedly

And it’s lovely

And then it snows

and buries us

knocks us flat on the ground

forces our fragile petals off the branch

Sometimes we open ourselves up to the world

and we are warmly welcomed

Other times we are frozen out

We risk showing ourselves

Hoping someone will shine on us

Sometimes we emerge

to a dark and unforgiving world

Even so

like the undaunted daffodil

we push ourselves up through the earth

again and again

For Día de los muertos

May this flame be a reminder of those who have come before us—

those whose heat and energy changed the world

transforming lives around them in ways that were

as quiet as a single candle illuminating the darkness for one soul and

as fierce as a bright bonfire lighting the night for an entire community

May their flames live on as the divine spark within each of us

We bring hearts inscribed with the words said to us

by parents and grandparents and great-grandparents,

by family not related by blood but family all the same.

We remember their advice,

whether it was good or bad,

the paths we followed our ancestors down,

or chose to ignore in favor of forging our own.

We honor those who came before us for what they taught us

and for inspiring us to learn on our own.

And we think about our own legacies,

and how we want to be known and remembered.

Let us celebrate life and honor death.

Let us open our hearts to the mystery.

Flowers Sing to Us of Promise

Flowers sing to us of promise.

Sudden flourishes of daffodils have appeared by the roadside.

Trees that were barren have blossomed.

What was dormant has awakened at last.

Whether your spirit is still in hibernation, or your soul is sprinting toward spring, come.

We celebrate a new season,

within us and around us.

Filled with Gratitude or Grief

Whether you are filled with gratitude or grief, feeling brilliant or bewildered, facing success or struggles, or more likely a mixture of all these experiences and a million more, come in.

We are a complex people, absorbing the weight of the world and immersed in our own troubles. At the same time, we are simple in our desire for love, for acceptance, for a feeling of belonging.

May you find a measure of that love, that acceptance, that belonging here, or wherever you are.

Listen to the spirit of life, listen to each other, and most importantly, listen to the still small voice within you.
